Deon Meyer makes his mark on film industry

Meyer explained that the entire movie was shot in only 19 days, with filming split between the tiny Karoo town of Loxton and the blustery streets of Strand near Cape Town.

After 21 years of writing best-selling novels, internationally acclaimed South African author Deon Meyer has now turned his attentions to the silver screen. The premier of his new Afrikaans film, Die Laaste Tango, which he directed and wrote the screenplay for, was held at the Innibos Arts Festival in Nelspruit on Friday, 28 June. The movie, which comes with English subtitles, will hit theatres across the country on 5 July. This is new territory for Meyer, who, despite having written scripts for films and television, had never previously directed a movie himself.“I had a taste of film with the TV series Orion and Transit, experiencing how my writing was elevated to something much better by the talent of filmmakers and camera-people. After 21 years of writing books, I wanted to tackle a new challenge,” Meyer said.
